When someone wants to connect a very large new load — or a new generator — to the grid, they cannot simply do it. The utility or regional grid operator must study the effect on the system: whether capacity exists, what upgrades are needed, what they cost, and who pays.
Projects enter that study process in order. That order is the queue.
How long
- Interconnection queue studies: 24 to 36 months in constrained markets, frequently with significant upgrade obligations attached
- Time to energize overall: about 18 months in favourable markets, five years or more in congested ones
Why queues got so long
Two things arrived at once. Renewable generation projects entered queues in enormous numbers over the past decade, and AI data center loads began requesting interconnections at a scale and speed the process was never designed for. The studies are sequential and interdependent — one project's result can change the next project's requirements — which makes the backlog difficult to clear quickly.
Why it matters to a landowner
Your parcel's value depends substantially on the queue condition in your utility's territory, which you did not choose and cannot change.
Two owners of near-identical land, one in a territory with headroom and a short queue, one in a congested one, are in very different positions through no action of their own. This is the single largest source of variation in data center land pricing, and it is invisible from the property itself.
